“The paintings become my stand-ins, behaving in ways that I can’t. They are show-offs, antagonizers, and acrobats. They are tourists trying to find the best place to take a selfie.”
Developed intuitively, Cristine Yunyk’s colourful and boisterous works explore the many possibilities of what a painting can be. Her surfaces may evoke movement, narrative, and bodily experience of the world, or simply act as provisional records of thoughts or ideas. This range of experience extends into her installations, where paintings often perform together as objects, expanding their narratives into the viewer’s realm.
Cristine Yunyk is a recent graduate of OCAD University’s drawing and painting program and a founding member of the collective Painters Make Better Lovers.
